Bungon Ritthiphakdee, Ms. (Bung-on Rit-ti-puk-dee) • Executive Director, Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) • Secretary-General, Board of the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) In 1989, Bungon founded Action on Smoking and Health (ASH Thailand). Working closely with government, academia, and civil society, she helped build the advocacy and policy momentum that contributed to the passage of comprehensive tobacco control legislation in Thailand in 1992 and again in 2017, strengthening the country’s long-term legal framework for tobacco control. In 2000, she founded the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), a regional network of tobacco control advocates across ASEAN countries. Under her leadership, SEATCA helped build a strong and cohesive regional tobacco control movement, strengthened collaboration across countries, and supported the development and implementation of stronger tobacco control policies throughout the region. www.seatca.org Bungon has also played an important role in promoting sustainable financing mechanisms for tobacco control and health promotion. As a member of the pioneer team of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) during 2001–2004, she contributed to the early development of the ThaiHealth model and has since helped promote this model as an innovative approach to securing dedicated and sustainable financing for health promotion and tobacco control. https://hpfhub.info/ In 2017, Bungon and the SEATCA team founded the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) to address one of the greatest obstacles to effective tobacco control implementation: tobacco industry interference. Through GGTC, she has advanced stronger implementation of WHO FCTC Article 5.3, promoted protection of public health policymaking from tobacco industry influence, and strengthened global accountability through the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index. https://ggtc.world/ Bungon is an effective and inclusive advocate whose approach connects the “head” (evidence), “hands” (the public and civil society), and “heart” (policymakers). This strategy has helped translate evidence and advocacy into policy and institutional change in Thailand, Southeast Asia, and globally, while also mentoring and strengthening successive generations of tobacco control advocates. In recognition of her contributions, Bungon received a WHO award in 2001 and the Luther L. Terry Award for Outstanding Leadership in Tobacco Control from the American Cancer Society in 2006.
